The Global Food and Environment Institute (GFEI) are delighted to invite you to join our July 2021 webinar ‘Preventing food waste while eating out'.

For this event, Dr Effie Papargyropoulou will provide a 20-minute presentation about her research on Surplus Food Redistribution (SFR) which is hailed as a ‘win-win’ strategy to address both household food insecurity and food waste. However, SFR is condemned as being a ‘band-aid’ solution that addresses neither the fundamental socio-economic causes of poverty, nor the systematic roots of food waste. In this study, we critically examine the motivations, challenges and opportunities for SFR in the UK, explore the ideal future scenario of SFR, and identify intervention pathways leading to this future. We put forward an agenda for the future of SFR in the UK for the next five to 10 years, including policy interventions required to achieve this future. We proposed that the future of SFR lies in a truly sustainable food system that meets the needs of the people and delivers socio-economic benefits, whilst respecting planetary boundaries

The seminar will be chaired by Professor Caroline Orfila from the University of Leeds.

This event is on 14th July 2021 from 12-12.40pm.  The event is open to the public and is free admission.  Tickets can be booked by clicking here.
