Exploring the Reuse of Salvaged Solar Panels for Community Projects

As solar photovoltaic (PV) systems continue to expand across the UK and globally, and more advanced PV technologies enter the market, increasing numbers of solar panels are beginning to reach the end of their first operational life. While many of these panels may no longer be suitable for large-scale commercial use, a significant proportion remain functional and could potentially be reused in communities rather than immediately recycled or disposed of.

Salman Rasheed is undertaking a project on the reuse of solar panels. The project forms part of his MSc research in Sustainability, undertaken during a placement at the Yorkshire Circular Lab during May-July 2026. With a multidisciplinary background in Physics, Environmental Science and Sustainability, Salman pursues a career where innovation, engineering, and sustainability come together to address complex environmental challenges.

The project seeks to reduce photovoltaic waste, improve resource efficiency, and support more accessible and community-focused renewable energy solutions, by exploring the feasibility of reusing salvaged solar panels within community-based projects as part of a wider circular economy approach for photovoltaic systems. The research aims to investigate how solar PV reuse is currently being approached in the UK and internationally, including existing end-of-life management practices, regulatory considerations, technical challenges and financial feasibility.

The study will also examine whether reuse can provide a more sustainable and economically viable alternative to recycling in certain contexts. Particular focus will be placed on understanding where reused solar panels may be most suitable, how their reusability can be assessed, and what factors communities and stakeholders should consider before implementation.

The project will develop a practical Quick Reference Guide to support organisations, community groups and decision-makers in identifying opportunities for solar PV reuse. The guide will cover key considerations such as health and safety requirements, panel testing and certification, community suitability, funding and financial support, insurance implications, maintenance needs, and the broader environmental, social, and economic benefits associated with extending the lifespan of solar PV systems.
